My Golf Coach Platform Like Having a Coach on Your Bag
November 3, 2020When I was promoted to the role of Associate Editor of Instruction for Golf Magazine in early 1999, one of my very first assignments was to travel to Orlando, Fla., to write a series of instruction articles with uber-talented Playing Editor Annika Sorenstam.
Up to that point, I didn’t know much about Sorenstam. She still wasn’t famous enough to be known by one name, like Tiger. The shy, unassuming Swede had won back-to-back U.S. Women’s Opens in 1995 and 1996 and even managed to win more LPGA tournaments than any other LPGA Tour player in the 1990s. But she still had been largely overshadowed by Australian rival Karrie Webb. Boy was that about to change!
Determined to become the No. 1 player in the world again and add 20 yards to her drives, she embarked on a weight-lifting regimen that included a large amount of balance and core training. In 2001, she won eight LPGA events and became the first woman golfer to shoot a 59 in competition. (Thus, the Ms. 59 nickname.) Then, for an encore, she captured a record-tying 11 LPGA tournaments the following year and, in 2003, took center stage in the golf world by teeing it up with the men in the PGA Tour’s Bank of America Colonial golf tournament. While she failed to make the cut, she did put up a respectable 1-over-par 71 in the first round.
Now, the world knew Sorenstam as Annika. Her appearance in Texas made Annika a household name in the sports world and gave the LPGA Tour a glimpse of the kind of star power the PGA Tour had with Tiger Woods. She also became somewhat of a media celebrity. A month later, she became the first woman golfer to grace the cover of Golf Magazine in several decades, and about a year later, she authored her own coffee table nstruction book titled, Golf Annika’s Way.
The 272-page full-color book was co-authored by yours truly, and helped launch my own side hustle as a golf book writer. Golf Annika’s Way was one of 11 golf instruction books I co-authored between 2003 and now. (See full list below.) I’ve ghostwritten so many books now that I tell people my real first name should be “With,” since that’s how I’m recognized on the cover of these books. By Martin Hall With Dave Allen. By Mike Bender With Dave Allen. By Laird Small with Dave Allen. Etc.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the game’s most renowned and creative teachers, including Hall, Bender, Small and Dave Pelz, and some other geniuses as well, including sports performance expert Dr. Rick Jensen, sports medicine specialist Vijay Vad, MD, and 3D biomechanics expert Michael Neff. I’ve even co-authored a running book, of all things. (Yes, I ran in and finished three NYC Marathons.)
So, if you’ve always dreamed of writing your own book, but didn’t have the time (what golf instructor does?), I can make it happen for you. And with little heavy lifting on your end. If you’re interested, please contact me at info@golfcontentsolutions.com and we’ll put a plan in action.
